Isn't this the 1/2 thing? Anyway. I really enjoyed creating this blog. At first, I didn't think I could get it all done and some of the tasks were things I had already been aware of...but I got through.

Week 8 Trying to ThinkFree-ly

Hey w'sup folks I'm getting close to finishing this thing....yeah!

...Since I have a gmail account I have occasionally used Google Docs to read attachments other people have sent to me...it works fairly well most of the time. Once I did have problem when I sent a Google doc to someone as an attachment. They were not able to view it. Well that sucked since it was important. In other instances it worked just fine. It could be quirky on its own or it could be the web browser on a particular computer...whatever it is I would still consider using any of these web based office productivity suites. What is important about these is that you do not have to get into the hard drive on your computer at work.

ThinkFree was pretty cool. I thought the blog/shared docs pages could be very helpful for research and course work. The one thing that is missing is the ability to create forms with these free online productivity suites. There is no Access type program similar to MS Access.

Wiki Wiki Wiki- -the DJ is practicing his scratching! Week 7

Wiki's can be cool...as long as you are certain that the info is correct. Therein lies the rub. The most commonly known wiki, Wikipedia has had its share of boo-boo's. But you just have to know that you need more than one source of information. It can be held to a scholarly level on occassion, but more often it is more likely a first stop for many school kids who have not yet learned that there are often more well received sources of information that can only be changed by the webmaster (the great and powerful One...oh wait that's the programmer, nevermind)

Aaack!!! There are teachers that are using Wikipedia as an acceptable source. I personally think it should be a secondary source. I realize that 11 year olds don't need to know how to search using Jstor, but come on....a wiki? Remember dmoz?

I am a member of Wikipedia, as part of team of voice-over performers that were part of the project to create audio materials for which there may not another source.

What is good about a Wiki is that since anyone can edit the content, material might regularly be updated as opposed to paper formats. The information can have a freshness to it.

Technorati is so Del.icio.us- Week 6

I like del.ico.us simply because I can get my bookmarks anywhere, no matter which browser I use. I prefer to use safari or firefox, and don't have to plug in my USB drive and find my bookmarks document backup. I keep my del.icio.us private.

I have not moved into the mindset that I can use del.icio.us for research. I am just used to yahooing and/or googling and then drilling into those results.

Now...as I have said in an earlier post I love Technorati, always did. Literally something for everyone. But, you can easily get lost in the site forever as you keep following one tag after another and forget what your original reason for going to the site in the first place :-D

Today, there was a great post on the good ole' Commodore 64 (the very first computer I ever bought waaaaayyy back in High School-when I learned how program using Basic)

Web 2.0 thoughts...

I think the Annoyed Librarian has some valid points on how to attempt to maintain Libraries in the age of Web 2.0 and technological advance. However, in the course of writing as devil's advocate many writers go to the extreme to prove the point. Snipped from the post is this example: What if my users are complete idiots? What if their "information culture" consists of staring at the television 10 hours a day watching game shows? Should I then make the library more like a game show? "Come on down, Luella! You've just won yourself a free library card!"

Of course, one of the main themes for many blog authors is the element of humor. I was underwhelmed by the writing.

I felt more aligned with the cool librarian.

But let's forget all of that and take a look at one of my favorite contributers to LJ, Roy Tennant.
I just think he can write and explain in a way that can assist non-library oriented folks towards some understanding.
